Multiplying Like and Unlike Signs

Rule #4 - When multiplying or dividing like and unlike signs, the product or quotient will always be positive.

5 x 4 = 20 -5 x (-4) = 20 20/5 = 4 -20/-5 = 4

Rule #5 - When multiplying or dividing unlike signs, the product or quotient will always be NEGATIVE!

-5 x 4 = -20 5 x (-4) = -20 -20/5 = -4 20/-5 = -4

Please note - Anything brought to a power will be that number times itself. The amount of times that it is multiplied is determined by the power.

5^2 = 25            (-5)^2 = 25                -5^2 = -25
